Doctors are not scientists, at least nor in their medical roles, because, though they certainly draw on science, what they do is neither objective enough nor oriented to the production of new knowledge--nor should it be...
But, in my belief and intrinsic motivation, doctors are craftpeople of the highest order. They might be like engineers, that lean very heavily on science; like diamond cutters, be coasting along on pure skill; like glassblowers or goldsmiths, what they do verges on art.
When i talk about what i think is missing i mean accomplishments that would have to be grafted onto an already prodigious set of achievements.
