在現今年輕一輩樂迷的印象中，麥可傑克森是位行為變態、舉止怪異的藝人，那張整型過度的臉孔尤其讓人噁爛。他們不會了解 80 到 90 年代間的麥可是「完美藝人」的代名詞，他的舞台表演是所有藝人努力學習的圭臬，他的一部 MV開拍，可以吸引一批一線明星前來助陣，即使只是擔任小配角露個臉而已。
麥可傑克森於 1982 年推出的經典「Thriller 顫慄」是音樂史上銷售量最高的專輯，其中推出的第二首單曲" Billie Jean 比莉珍 "曾是七週冠軍曲，翌年的葛萊美獎典禮上，麥可意氣風發的拿下八項獎座，" Billie Jean 比莉珍 "就為他拿下" 最佳節奏藍調演唱 "、" 最佳節奏藍調歌曲"兩項大獎。
" Billie Jean "的確是實至名歸的經典單曲，即使今天聽來，它在音樂編曲的處理依然十分出色。它的寫作靈感據說是麥可傑克森經常受到歌迷騷擾而來，特別是有一次瘋狂的女歌迷爬過麥可住家後院圍牆，大聲控訴麥可就是她小孩的親身父親，王牌製作人昆西瓊斯後來回憶說，證實了這種說法。麥可在接受媒體訪問時表示，在他小時候和四位兄長以「Jackson 5 傑克森五兄弟」為團名四處巡迴演唱時，就經常遇到類似狀況，特別是長相帥氣的哥哥傑曼傑克森就曾在演唱會當中遭到女歌迷當場嗆聲要他負責等狀況。
麥可也說到，當這首歌剛在他腦海裡產生雛型，他就很清楚這會是一首大賣的暢銷曲。「某一天的錄音空檔，我和樂手 Nelson Hayes 行駛於高速公路上，一路上我的心裡都在哼著這首歌，下高速公路時，一位騎摩托車的孩子向我們示意說車子著火了，我們才注意到車子在冒煙，下車察看發現那輛勞斯萊斯底部已經著火，那個孩子救了我們，如果車子爆炸，我們也許已經喪命，我一直將注意力放在這首在腦海裡飄浮的曲調，而忽略了這可能發生的恐怖事實。」
感謝那個孩子，這首歌終究被錄音完成，麥可的自傳「Moon Walk 月球漫步」提到，製作人昆西瓊斯原本想將歌名改為" Not my lover 不是我的愛人 "，因為他怕會和著名的網球女將 Billie Jean King 金恩夫人造成混淆，產生不當聯想，而且他意欲縮減太長的前奏，但都在麥可的堅持下而作罷，今天我們聽到的" Billie Jean "都是麥可傑克森意志實行下誕生的成品。
「Moon Walk 月球漫步」是麥可自傳的書名，也是他最著名的自創舞步，1983 年 Motown 摩城唱片(美國黑人音樂的重鎮)廿五週年晚會上的表演，是他首度將這個看似前進、實則後退的舞步呈現在世人面前，整段表演看似即興，其實是精心設計，麥可舞來渾然天成，後來凡是模仿麥可的，幾乎都要師法這一段精采到爆的經典演出。麥可在舞蹈和音樂上的非凡成就，透過當時新興媒體 MTV 音樂頻道的強力放送，使他成為少數跨越膚色界線的黑色藝人，也將舞蹈提昇為舞台表演的主角，後來有許多藝人光靠精湛舞技就能在歌壇攻城掠地，如他的胞妹 Janet Jackson 珍娜傑克森、珍娜傑克森的編舞師 Paula Abdul 寶拉阿芭杜，和一大掛的偶像團體。
