Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters invited Mr. Chen, Jin-Fa, the internationally famous director of ecological documentary to undertake the production of “In Search of the Relic Species from the Jurassic Period—the Story of Guanwu Formosan Salamander,” the accomplishment of which took as long as three years of study investigation and filming. This documentary won the top honor of Platinum Remi Aword in the Nature & Wildlife category at the 40th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival held in the U.S. This news arrived as a magnificent inspiration for the Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters, the team of director Chen and people at home.
Guanwu Formosan Salamander is a new species found in Guanwu region in Shei-Pa National Park in 1996. This species is rather precious since it is a very rare living fossil. However, Guanwu Formosan Salamander has faced a major living crisis because of the greenhouse effect, and the unfamiliarity with this species' life history also increases the difficulty of conservation project. In an effort to observe and record the ecological image of Guanwu Formosan Salamander, Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters authorized director Chen, Jin-Fa to undertake the investigation, research and to produce a ecological documentary film of “Guanwu Formosan Salamander”. After years of hardworking, its secretive life was finally unveiled in 2004. The production of this film not only witnessed the history, but also established a significant milestone for the conservation of Guanwu Formosan Salamander.
Ann ual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival is the largest and longest-established film festival which draws thousands of films to attend each year. This year, there were 4300 works from 37 countries around the world entering the film festival, forming a fierce competition. Under this situation, the ecological documentary film from Taiwan won the top honor of Platinum Remi Aword. This award means Taiwan 's efforts on ecological conservation have been noted in the international community; and further, this accomplishment is significant in that Taiwan and Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters' national image of conservation is largely improved.
At this time of International Polar Year, environmental crisis is a world focuses. In order to promote the ecological conservation work for Guanwu Formosan Salamander, Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters slated July 6th to launch a serial activities of “In Search of the Relic Species from the Jurassic Period—Ecological Education Month of Guanwu Formosan Salamander,” and the special topic website of Guanwu Formosan Salamander activities has been produced to open in the last third of May. Through the website, people can go deep into the arduous filming process. And the entire serial activity includes many ecological seminars and parents-children's activities. Besides, there will be the premiere of “In Search of the Relic Species from the Jurassic Period—the Story of Guanwu Formosan Salamander”. People are encouraged to attend the premiere.
