史提夫汪德生於１９５０年，出生時即兩眼全盲。不過，上天賜予他極佳的音感與創作才能，十二歲時就被唱片公司發掘，隨即推出專輯唱片，震驚了美國歌壇，被譽為黑人音樂界的音樂神童。７０年代的史提夫汪德，逐漸進入創作成熟期，不僅專輯暢銷，而且都獲得相當高的評價，"Talking book"、"Innervisions"等後來都入選為流行音樂史上最重要的一百張專輯。如今在美國，是位地位相當崇高的大師級人物。
